Adams County Seeks Public Comment on New Commissioner Districts

Following a mandate by voters in November 2012 to expand its Board of Commissioners, Adams County is in the process of redefining its commissioner districts. The county will host two public hearings and four neighborhood meetings in the coming weeks to gather public comments regarding three redistricting options for the 2014 election. After considering the public’s input, the final map of the five new commissioner districts will be selected by the Board of Commissioners on June 26, 2013.

“This an exciting and historic time for Adams County voters,” said Board of Commissioners Chair Eva J. Henry. “Last November the voters chose to expand the board from three to five members. It is now important that citizens continue to take an active role in their government by participating in the redistricting process. We need the public’s input on how the new district boundaries are drawn.”

Three commissioner seats will be up for election/reelection in 2014. One seat will be for a two-year term (instead of the customary four-year term) in order to stagger the terms for the five seats (as required by Colorado law). The current board will decide which district will receive the seat with the initial two-year term at the June 26 public hearing. In 2016, three of the commissioner seats will be up for election/reelection—one of which will be for the seat with the initial two-year term.
