Fire Department Citizen Academy now accepting applications —

The Westminster Fire Department is offering a free, 13-week course for citizens to learn about the fire service. Vehicle extrication, emergency medical response, water rescue and fire operations are just a few of the topics included in the course. The format includes classroom lecture and hands-on experiences.

New Westminster homes require fire sprinklers beginning Jan. 1

— New homes built in Westminster after Jan. 1, will benefit from a new building code requirement - residential fire sprinklers. These new building code requirements apply only to new homes and do not apply to residential additions, alterations or modifications. By requiring new homes to have sprinklers, the city has taken a progressive step to bring this safety feature to citizens. Modern fire sprinklers only engage in the area where heat is detected. Donate to help build Jessica’s park

— Fundraising has begun to help redesign a Westminster park in honor of Jessica Ridgeway. The Jessica Ridgeway Memorial Park will be an enduring tribute to the memory of a girl whose joyful spirit touched so many. In keeping with the family’s wishes, the park will become a place for positive reflection and memories. Plans for the park include some of Jessica's favorite things, like a zip line-like track ride, knock-knock jokes, flowers and her favorite color, purple. Jefferson County pledges $100,000 to Ridgeway Memorial Park

— Jefferson County Commissioners on Dec. 19 announced a $100,000 contribution to the City of Westminster’s Jessica Ridgeway Memorial Park Fund. This is the first major contribution to the park renovation, which will be an enduring tribute to the memory of a girl whose joyful spirit touched so many. Water, sewer rates to rise 4 percent in 2013-14

— The City of Westminster will increase water and sewer rates by 4 percent in 2013 and 2014, with the average residential customer impact of an additional $2.03 per month in 2013 and $2.13 per month in 2014. This rate adjustment will fund increasing costs for operations and maintenance, and system improvements such as replacing sewer pipe, upgrading components of the water treatment plants and assisting in the protection of the city’s water supply. City of Westminster Economic Development Report

Applications being reviewed for service commitment competition — City staff received one TMUND (Traditional Mixed Use Neighborhood Development), two multi-family, three single family detached and two senior housing applications for the 2013 service commitment competition for new residential projects. This competition was put in place to aid the city in balancing growth with the city’s service capabilities including existing and future water supply. Applications will be reviewed in the coming weeks. The tentative City Council date for the service commitment awards is Jan. 28....
