Thornton Community Read 2013 starts January 16

TASHCO and the Thornton Arts & Culture Division invite you to participate in the first part of the 2013 Community Read series continues in 2013 with a series of programming based on the "My Story" theme. We will explore the three main cultures found in Adams County (White, Hispanic and Asian) through a series of thoughtful first-person books and activities to help us discover ourselves and learn more about those around us. The kick-off is January 16 at Anythink Wright Farms, 5877 E. 120th Ave., Thornton at 6:30 p.m. The “My Story” series is a three month series—you can choose to read one or two books each month:

Free Homebuyer workshop

The next free homebuyer workshop in Thornton will be held January 28 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. at Thornton City Hall, 9500 Civic Center Dr. These workshops provide a convenient place for Thornton residents to learn about the ins-and-outs of buying a home, and are conducted in conjunction with HUD certified housing counseling agencies. Those who attend may be eligible for down payment or closing cost assistance from the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, Colorado Housing Assistance Corporation, Adams County Housing Authority or the Colorado Resources and Housing Development Corporation. Thornton: First of its kind pedestrian signal now in place on Huron Street

A new pedestrian signal was put into operation on Wednesday, December 19 on Huron Street, just north of West 84th Avenue, to increase safety for those crossing Huron Street. It was installed in partnership with the City of Federal Heights and the Pinnacle School, each providing equal funding. This type of pedestrian signal is the first of its kind in the City of Thornton. It stays "dark" until it's activated by a pedestrian. At that point drivers see a yellow-flashing light, which then turns solid yellow, then solid red, stopping traffic and allowing the pedestrian to cross safely. When the 'Don't Walk' signal activates, motorists will see a flashing red light, and when the crosswalk clears, drivers may proceed. ...

City of Thornton Christmas Recycling

Christmas wrap collection During the week following Christmas, December 26 through 31, City trash/recycle customers may place their flattened holiday boxes and bagged wrapping paper at the curb for collection on their regular trash collection day. Customers are asked to use their black trash container first or consider placing eligible items with other recyclables in the green recycle container. Boxes and bags filled with trash or debris placed outside the black containers will not be collected....

City of Thornton and BTAC announce new shop local campaign and website – Shop Thornton First!

THORNTON, CO… The City of Thornton and the Businesses of Thornton Advisory Commission (BTAC) announce the launch of a new shop local campaign and website, www.shopthorntonfirst.com, targeted to the residents and businesses of the City of Thornton. “The goal of the Shop Thornton First campaign is to motivate residents of Thornton to support Thornton businesses and keep their tax dollars in the City to support City services like police, fire and parks and recreation,” says City of Thornton Manager of Business Retention & Expansion Jessica Erickson....

Cold water rescue training

Beginning at 10 a.m. today, Thornton fire personnel will conduct cold water rescue training at the lake north of City Hall, 9500 Civic Center Drive, on December 17, 19, and 21, with multiple sessions planned each day. The training takes place near the bridge and island portion of the lake. The focus of the training will be rescuing a simulated victim found in the water. Fire personnel will deploy the Fire Department rapid deployment, and personnel will train on managing a patient suffering from severe hypothermia due to extended time exposed to a cold water environment....
