GRANT-FUNDED ROUTE SERVES NORTHERN RANGE COMMUTERS

COMMERCE CITY, COLO. – After three years of seeking additional transportation options for residents, Commerce City celebrated the inaugural 104X bus route this morning, welcoming commuters with pastries and coffee courtesy of King Soopers MarketPlace.

“Bringing this route to the city was a cooperative effort between the city, the Regional Transportation District (RTD) and the Denver Regional Council of Governments that will greatly benefit our residents looking for more public transportation options,” said Chris Cramer, interim community development director. “There are few new RTD routes in the New Year and we’re very proud to be one of them.”

More than 2,692 Commerce City residents list Denver as their city of employment, and with 24,783 residents in the northern range, that can quickly create a traffic jam during the morning commute. To reduce single occupancy vehicle trips, the city secured a three-year, $148,000 annual federal grant from the Denver Regional Council of Governments for the route. The city will contribute $37,000 annually. As ridership grows, RTD will evaluate incorporating this service in their permanent route planning following the conclusion of the grant.

The new RTD express bus will pick up passengers along E. 104th Avenue and continue on to Interstate 76 before connecting to the Interstate 25 HOV lanes, with an end point at the Central Business District in downtown Denver. There are three morning rush hour service pick up times and three evening drop off times.

Council members will meet with RTD officials this week to talk about FasTracks and additional bus service for the city.  “More work still needs to be done to provide public transportation to serve our community,” added Cramer. The city is exploring other service areas and will continue to advocate with RTD.” To learn more about this new route or to buy a bus pass, visit www.rtd-denver.com.
